Where Can You Spend an Entire Life in Alternative Reality

IsraelTel Aviv

The Tel Aviv Cinematheque was established with the aim of deepening the awareness for the art of cinema among the general public. It is a symbol of artistic freedom and an open door for creators from all ends of the social and political spectrum. The Cinematheque instilled the love of cinema in generations of viewers and influenced many filmmakers who saw it as their second home. The Cinematheque operates from artistic considerations and allows watching screenings of films that commercial cinemas avoid showing due to economic considerations.

The Cinematheque was opened in May 1973, five months before the outbreak of the Yom Kippur War, and for over 40 years was managed by Alon Garbuz. It was originally established in the "Municipal Worker's House" on Pumbedita Street, however, due to neighbors' complaints, it changed its residence several times until it was finally moved to its current location on HaArba'a Street. Today it is visited by around 60,000 viewers every month.

In 1994, a special library containing rare film collections was established at the Cinematheque, which is the largest information center for Israeli and international cinema in the country. You can find a movie in the library that you have watched in the past and is related to a special memory (maybe the first date with your partner ?), watch different adaptations of a favorite story, complete your cinematic education by watching the "100 Greatest Movies of All Time", or simply dive in and spend an entire life of alternative reality in the cinema.
