The Landlord Got Crazy

IsraelTel Aviv

"The Crazy House" is a residential building at 181 HaYarakon street, near Atarim Square and Tel Aviv's waterfront. The building was designed by the Swiss architect Leon Ganieva and its construction was completed in 1989. It is called "Crazy" after its unusual appearance, reminiscent of the style of the famous Spanish architect Gaudi.

Antonio Gaudi was a Catalan modernist architect who gained worldwide fame for his original and unique style. The buildings he designed and built are characterized by flowing sculptural lines and a distinct and unusual appearance, almost fantastic. Gaudi's most famous building is the church of Sagrada Familia - the Holy Family, located in Barcelona. The construction of the church began in 1882 and Gaudí worked on it for decades, until he was unfortunately killed in a tram accident in 1926. The church has not been completed to this day and its construction has continued since then, yet it has become one of the main and most famous attractions in Barcelona, and in Spain in general.

The crazy house is reminiscent of residential buildings designed by Gaudi, such as Casa Mila and Casa Batiio. A large mural, depicting scenes from the Garden of Eden, is painted on its front facing HaYarakon street, integrated with plants and trees growing in the building. Inside the building there are additional wall paintings, and many other artistic and sculptural elements. The back facade facing the sea is decorated with a bright pattern designed with flowing and round lines inspired by sea waves and ship sails.

The eccentric building has become a recognized and well-known architectural landmark in Tel Aviv, and a model of it is even displayed in Mini Israel - a miniature park containing models of famous buildings and places in the State of Israel.
