The Eskimo Limon Ice Cream Shop

IsraelTel Aviv

Montana was a famous ice cream parlor located in the old Ganey Hata’arucha exhibition compound in Tel Aviv. It was built near the Levant Fair complex that was built in 1934 next to the estuary of the Yarkon River, to house the exhibition pavilions of the Tel Aviv International Trade Fair that took place during the 1920s and 1930s. The famous symbol of the fair was the Flying Camel, designed by the architect Arieh El-Hanani.

In 1960, Israel Magdi and Abraham Vogel, who immigrated to Israel from the state of Montana in the United States, started an ice cream factory. A few years later, additional partners joined, and the name of the factory was changed to "Montana Ice Cream" after the name of the state of Montana from where Vogel brought the production machines.

The ice cream parlor opened near the Tel Aviv port and sold American ice cream in chocolate and vanilla flavors. It was designed in a classic American style with slot machines and a record player.

During the 1960s and 1970s, the ice cream parlor became a popular meeting place for teenagers in the city. It became especially famous thanks to the Eskimo Limon film series as the favorite hangout place of the main characters Benzi, Momo and Yudale, and many scenes from the movies were filmed there.

Montana Ice Cream slowly fell from its position and its place was taken by other sites around the city. The port area as a whole was neglected for many years, which also contributed to this. During the renovation of the complex in the second decade of the 21st century, an agreement was initially signed to renovate the building where the ice cream parlor was located, but in the end it did not materialize and the shop was closed.
