The Lool Gang’s Shack

IsraelTel Aviv

"Avigdor's Shack" was a well-known building that stood on “Metzitzim Beach”, an integral part of the mythology and landscape of Tel Aviv. The shack, which belonged to Avigdor Tsabari and was located at 16 Hanamal Street, served as the meeting place for the “Lool Gang”, a well-known group of artists led by Uri Zohar and Arik Einstein that had a significant impact on Israeli culture. The Lool gang was active in the early 1970s and created movies, TV shows, sketches, and music albums that became inalienable assets.

The shack appears on the cover of the album "Avigdor’s Grass” by Arik Einstein and Miki Gabrielov from 1971. The album, one of Einstein's most successful, includes several songs that have become Israeli classics such as "Me and you", "I See Her on the Way to High School”, and others. The shack also appears in many of the scenes of the 1972 movie “Metzitzim" (which means “Peepers”), one of the most well-known Israeli cult films, as the shack of Gute - one of the main characters played by Uri Zohar.

The shack was demolished by the Tel Aviv municipality in 2005 as part of renewing the beach strip, after a long legal battle that lasted several years against its owner.
